Each paragraph in an academic paper builds on the previous paragraph to build supports for the thesis statement. In the most traditional forms of academic writing, the paper builds to an obvious conclusion which reinforces the original thesis statement.

Some of the most simple forms of academic writing are the five paragraph essays and term papers. The key to good academic writing is to conduct large amounts of research and then outline the information, tying the important fact together in a cohesive argument. And if research is the key, then logic and knowledge are the backbone of solid academic writing.
